From NICU survivor to NICU volunteer.
A story that started at birth.
Every day, families walk into a NICU facing fear, uncertainty, and countless unanswered questions. I know that feeling — not because I remember it, but because I lived it.
When I was born, I developed Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN), a life-threatening condition that left me fighting for my life. I spent the first two months of my life in the NICU, including more than five weeks on a ventilator. My parents were told the odds of survival were incredibly small.
Against those odds, I survived.
Growing up, I heard the story of my birth over and over. As I got older, I began to understand what my family had gone through — and how many other families continue to face those same frightening days in NICUs every year.
Giving back where my life began.
That realization inspired me to give back. Today, I volunteer in the very NICU where my life began, reading to babies and supporting families during one of the most difficult times of their lives.
My goal is to make sure every family who arrives receives a brand-new children's book — a small gift that can provide comfort, encourage bonding, and create a special memory even during an incredibly challenging season.
I can't change what families are going through, but I hope I can make those first days just a little bit brighter.
